Membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis (MPGN) is a pattern seen on kidney biopsy, not a single disease with one cause or one treatment. The glomeruli develop mesangial and endocapillary changes with remodeling of the capillary wall, often producing the classic double-contour or tram-track appearance.\n\nThe bedside presentation often combines nephritic and nephrotic features: hematuria and hypertension from glomerular inflammation, plus proteinuria, hypoalbuminemia, and edema from an abnormally permeable filtration barrier. The central clinical task is to determine which deposit pattern is present, search for a secondary cause, protect kidney function, and recognize complications early.
