Decongestants

Decongestants matter in CNPE/NP readiness preparation because they sit at the boundary between routine care and avoidable harm. Decongestants reduce nasal mucosal congestion through adrenergic effects, so learners must protect patients with cardiovascular, glaucoma, urinary retention, thyroid, pregnancy, pediatric, and interaction risks. For Canadian nurse practitioner readiness, the learner must not memorize a list in isolation. The safer pattern is to ask what patient problem is being treated, what physiologic change is expected, what finding would make the treatment unsafe, and which action fits diagnostic reasoning, prescribing safety, contraindication screening, follow-up planning, and referral thresholds.
