Cardiac Glycosides

Cardiac glycosides matter in CNPE/NP readiness preparation because digoxin is useful only when the learner can hold two truths at once: it can improve contractility and slow AV nodal conduction, and it can become dangerous when renal function, electrolytes, rhythm, dose, or interacting medications shift. The exam trap is treating digoxin like a simple heart medication. It is better understood as a narrow-therapeutic-index medication that requires bedside reasoning before every routine-looking dose, refill, or teaching conversation. For CNPE/NP readiness, the NP priority is therapeutic reasoning: decide whether digoxin is appropriate, whether another rate-control or heart-failure strategy is safer, how renal function and interacting drugs change the plan, and when urgent referral or antidote evaluation is needed.
