A laboratory result is only as reliable as the specimen submitted for analysis. Correct collection links the right patient to the right test, container, technique, label, and transport conditions. Contamination, hemolysis, insufficient volume, an incorrect additive, or a mislabeled tube can produce a misleading result or delay treatment. For the U.S. LVN/LPN, specimen collection is performed only when permitted by applicable state law, employer policy, education, competency, and the assigned role. The practical nurse follows the requisition and facility procedure, protects the patient during collection, and stops to seek direction when the order, specimen requirements, or scope of the task is unclear.
