A missed priority in Substance Use Disorders can delay recognition of deterioration or allow preventable harm to continue. Safety focus: Opioid intoxication TRIAD = MRC: Miosis (pinpoint), Respiratory depression, CNS/Consciousness depression. OPIOID WITHDRAWAL opposite = COLD TURKEY: dilated pupils, COLD sweats, lacrimation, rhinORRHEA, piloERection, kEY = no miosis. Alcohol withdrawal danger: AWOL — person with alcohol use disorder Withdrawal On Life support; treat with BZDs. STIMULANTS = EVERYTHING UP: pupils up (mydriasis), HR up, BP up, temp up, mood up (then crash down).
In a Substance Use Disorders item, explain the first cue you noticed, the complication it predicts, the nursing action within scope, and the finding that proves the response worked.
Alcohol withdrawal CAN be life-threatening (seizures, DTs) — opioid withdrawal is typically NOT life-threatening (very uncomfortable but usually not fatal in otherwise healthy adults) This keeps Substance Use Disorders reasoning tied to client safety instead of recall-only studying.
