Pneumonia and Atelectasis

Pneumonia and atelectasis are common respiratory conditions that impair gas exchange and can lead to hypoxemia, respiratory failure, sepsis, and death if not recognized and treated promptly. Although both conditions may present with similar symptoms such as dyspnea, decreased oxygen saturation, and abnormal lung sounds, they are distinct disease processes. Pneumonia is an infection of the lung parenchyma resulting in inflammation and accumulation of fluid, pus, and cellular debris within the alveoli. Atelectasis is the collapse of alveoli resulting in reduced lung expansion and impaired oxygen exchange. Understanding the differences between these disorders is essential because treatments differ significantly. Pneumonia generally requires antimicrobial therapy, whereas atelectasis requires lung re-expansion strategies. ───────────────────────────────
