NCLEX-RN
Pediculosis pubis is an infestation of coarse hair by pubic lice. The lice feed on human blood and can cause itching and skin irritation. Pubic lice differ from head lice, body lice and the mites that cause scabies. Choosing care requires identifying the infestation and the affected site rather than treating every itch as the same condition. The RN assesses symptoms, examines with consent, supports appropriate treatment and helps prevent reinfestation. An infestation is not proof of poor hygiene, a person's character or a particular relationship history. Avoid stigmatizing language. Although pubic lice do not usually cause a serious systemic illness, scratching can damage skin and lead to secondary bacterial infection.
