Pleurisy, also known as pleuritis, is inflammation of the pleura, the thin membrane lining the chest wall (parietal pleura) and covering the lungs (visceral pleura).

This inflammation usually involves the pain-sensitive parietal layer, resulting in characteristic chest pain. Most cases of pleurisy are viral in origin and tend to resolve as the inflammation subsides. It is important to understand that "pleurisy" describes a pain pattern and inflammatory process rather than identifying the underlying disease itself. Clinical details help determine the likelihood of serious conditions such as pulmonary embolism, infection, bleeding, or other inflammatory diseases. Therefore, the diagnostic goal extends beyond simply demonstrating pleural inflammation to identifying or ruling out these life-threatening causes. Once such conditions have been assessed and uncomplicated pleurisy is confirmed, treatment typically begins with a first-line anti-inflammatory option like an NSAID, for example, ibuprofen. If NSAIDs are contraindicated or unsafe for the patient, an alternative analgesic plan should be sought rather than withholding pain relief altogether. Administering prescribed analgesics and anti-inflammatory medications is essential to managing symptoms and improving patient comfort.
