Why Nociception Becomes Pain
Nociception is the nervous system’s detection and transmission of potentially harmful stimuli.
Nociception is the nervous system’s detection and transmission of potentially harmful stimuli. It begins when peripheral nociceptors are activated by tissue injury or inflammation. A-delta fibres carry relatively fast, sharp signals; C fibres carry slower, aching or burning signals. The impulse enters the dorsal horn of the spinal cord and travels along ascending pathways to the brain, where the pain experience is perceived. Nociception and pain are related but not identical. Nociception describes neural signalling; pain is the person’s conscious, subjective experience. A patient may report severe pain without dramatic vital-sign changes, and a patient may have tissue injury with little outward behaviour. The report still requires assessment rather than dismissal. The pattern offers an initial clinical clue: - Nociceptive pain usually follows tissue injury or inflammation. It may be localized, tender, aching, or worse with movement. - Neuropathic pain arises from nerve dysfunction or injury.
