Cultural safety asks more than whether a nurse knows about another group's customs. It asks whether the patient can communicate, make decisions, ask questions, and receive care without racism, stereotyping, dismissal, or avoidable power-based harm. For the RPN, this begins with learning from the individual rather than assigning beliefs based on identity, appearance, name, or background. It also extends beyond the bedside. When policies, language access, staffing practices, or complaint processes repeatedly disadvantage a group, the problem is organizational as well as interpersonal. A culturally safe nurse responds to the immediate concern and helps make the barrier visible so it can be corrected.
